Join the Holy Cross volunteer team and make a difference!

Volunteering is more than just giving time - it’s about making a lasting impact in someone’s life. At Holy Cross, our volunteers play a vital role in enriching the lives of patients and their families. If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community, hear from one of our dedicated volunteers about why she chose to get involved.

Touching people’s lives

For volunteer Liz Owen, the decision to give back came from a deeply personal experience. Having been injured in the 7/7 London bombings in 2005, she experienced firsthand what it means to rely on the kindness and care of others. That moment of vulnerability was life-changing, instilling a deep appreciation for the support she received and inspiring a desire to do the same for others.

“During this time, I experienced what it is like to be vulnerable and dependent on other people. It brought home that life can change in an instant. The feeling of being cared for is something I want to be able to give to others. Touching people’s lives in a way they truly need is rewarding beyond words,” says Liz.

At Holy Cross, volunteering is about bringing normality, joy, and companionship to patients who may be facing life-altering conditions. Whether it’s playing games, engaging in conversation, or simply holding someone’s hand, every interaction brings a sense of connection and comfort.

Liz’s role at Holy Cross

Liz volunteers for a couple of hours a week and contributes in various ways, including:

  • Participating in patient activities like bingo, ball games, and art classes.
  • Helping to adapt games so that every patient, regardless of ability, can share in the experience.
  • Assisting in events such as music therapy and social gatherings.
  • Taking patients from their rooms to the activities room.
  • Providing companionship to patients and their families.

One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering is finding creative ways to engage patients. Liz says: “Many patients enjoy using percussion instruments because it can be a way for those who are severely disabled to have an impact, to be heard and make a sound.”

The rewards of volunteering

The impact isn’t just on the patients - it’s life-changing for volunteers too. In Liz’s experience she has observed that: “Volunteering here can be fun and there’s lots of smiling and laughter. Just getting a simple smile from a patient is an achievement and seeing a glimpse of their sense of humour is a special thing. I feel uplifted by the experience.”

Volunteers also gain valuable skills, including communication, empathy, and adaptability. Commenting, Liz says: “Volunteering at Holy Cross has helped me develop my imagination and experiment with ways to communicate. I’ve also found that it has challenged me in ways that have helped me grow as a person.”

Support for families

Families also benefit from the presence of volunteers. Having someone to talk to while visiting a loved one in the hospital provides comfort and a sense of normality. “It’s reassuring for families to know there are people around who will engage with their loved ones even when they’re not there,” says Liz.

Why volunteer at Holy Cross

Liz describes Holy Cross as a friendly and welcoming place where volunteers are truly valued. She says: “The staff are inspiring. Their dedication is remarkable, and it’s a privilege to be part of that environment.”

Her advice to anybody thinking about volunteering at Holy Cross is to get to know patients and look for ways to build on the abilities they have. Liz says: “The Holy Cross ethos recognises the importance of people’s dignity, and it’s rewarding to be thinking about how best to do this, sometimes in challenging circumstances. It’s important to treat everyone as an individual and to apply empathy. You can take away what you learn about what it is to be human.”

Volunteers are given training and support to help them feel confident in their role. From learning about different conditions to understanding the needs of patients, Holy Cross ensures every volunteer is equipped to make a difference.
