Fundraising Friends buy equipment for patients

Patients at Holy Cross Hospital in Haslemere are being assisted on their road to recovery by the recent acquisition of cutting-edge rehabilitation equipment.

Thanks to fundraising efforts throughout the year, the Friends of Holy Cross have made it possible for the hospital to purchase an innovative balance training system and a stationary cycling trainer.

The THERA-Trainer is a fall-safe, dynamic standing frame for postural control and balance training. It is suitable for people who have difficulty standing as it helps strengthen the core and improve the patient’s alignment in preparation for them relearning how to walk.

The THERA-Tigo is a motor-assisted cycling trainer for passive, assisted and active cycling and can be used from the comfort of a chair or wheelchair. Physiotherapists can adjust the settings so that the patient can receive a minimal amount of assistance or be challenged to power through a controlled level of resistance. The Tigo’s inbuilt technology also generates a report to show the patient’s emerging functionality and how much activity was achieved.

The Chairman of the Friends Torquil Sligo-Young and Chief Executive Frances Campion-Smith saw the equipment being demonstrated by Sister Caroline who is currently a patient at Holy Cross Hospital. Sister Caroline told how she likes using the cycling trainer which introduces an element of fun as well as work. She said: “I am very fortunate to come here. I have three sessions of physio a week and one of hydrotherapy which I love. I can see the benefits of using the equipment as I can now cycle with some resistance although I find it a little bit harder.”

Inpatient physiotherapy team lead, Raymundo Milay says: “We are immensely grateful to the Hospital Friends for their generous donation. The new equipment represents a significant advancement in our ability to provide rehabilitation care to our patients and allows them to achieve their recovery goals more effectively and efficiently.”

As a charity, Holy Cross Hospital specialises in neurorehabilitation and provides care for people with complex neurological disabilities resulting from injuries or medical episodes. With the new rehab equipment helping patients achieve optimal recovery, the hospital is now exploring how it can fulfil its ambition to offer neuro physio to the wider community.
